Fort McAllister was the southernmost and most active Confederate fortification in Savannah's defenses. This massive earthwork, on the shores of the Ogeechee River, was intended to protect the river, railroad, cotton and rice plantations along it's shores.
The fort finally fell to the union forces, after several attempts by the union, in December of 1864.
