When I made reservations at Cape Henlopen State Park three months ago the historical significance of the park or the area was not on my radar. I chose this campground because of:
- great location with beaches on both the Atlantic coast and Delaware Bay.
- Recently redone with new bath houses and new paved roads.
- Miles of awesome bike and hiking trails.
- Disc golf course on-site.
- Proximity to services.
The park is located in Lewes Delaware. I knew that Delaware was the first state but I didn't realize that Lewes was the first town in this first state. On top of that we quickly realized that Cape Henlopen State Park is situated in the middle of Fort Miles. Fort Miles was build in 1941 as part of the coastal defense to protect the many assets of Delaware Bay (oil refineries, factories) and Philadelphia. Buildings, bunkers, and
observation towers are scattered through out the park.
