2020 Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup

Updated: Sep 26, 2020

Attending the Buffalo Roundup has been on our bucket list for some time and we finally made it happen! The event doesn't start until 9:30am but the gates open at 6:15am. We left Keystone at 5:30am, arrived at the Wildlife loop entrance at 6:05am and it took and hour plus to get parked. I couldn't believe how many were ahead of us! I guess it shouldn't be a surprise considering there is usually 20,000 attendees every year.

Pancake breakfast is available but we packed our own goodies and avoided the LONG lines.

The weather was wonderful for this time of year. The morning was cool but the sun eventually came out about the time the Buffalo showed up. It was impressive to witness approximately 1400 Buffalo coming down the hill with approximately 45 cowboys guiding the way and many trucks/SUVs acting as a moving fence. Once the Buffalo are in the corral the work is just beginning for the crew. The process of culling and inoculating makes for a long day.

Yes, there is a lot of traffic and plenty of waiting around but it was definitely worth it! We would do this again if we were ever in the area during this event.
