The Bold Coast Scenic Byway provides an opportunity to experience the beauty of Downeast Maine. The byway is characterized by rocky coastline dotted with fishing harbors with lobster, scallop, and ground-fishing boats. What better way to experience this beautiful byway but on the back of a motorcycle?
I hit the road around 6:30am with fog and a chill in the air. I arrived at the eastern most US town of Lubec around 9am and crossed the FDR Memorial bridge into Campobello Canada. The border crossing was quick and painless.
A short ride across the border brought me to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. FDR spent his summers here for the first 40 years of his life. As President, his attitudes and policies toward Canada and toward international cooperation were undoubtedly influenced by his many experiences during summer vacations on Campobello.
The FDR "cottage" is open to the public and offers free tours. This 18 bedroom, 6 bathroom, cottage takes you back in time to the life of the privileged.
The fog over the ocean was persistent during my time on the island. It finally cleared just as I was about to head back over the Lubec narrows The border crossing into the US was uneventful but clearly a little more intense compared to crossing into Canada..
After exploring Lubec, and checking out the local brewery, I headed back to our campsite and was able to enjoy the ride with clear skies and warmer weather.
A wonderful day.
